At the sidelines of the 15th African Union Summit held in Kampala during 25th -27th July, Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif met the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni where the prime minister expressed President Mubarak's greetings, and showed the Egyptian president and people solidarity with the Ugandan president and people over the terrorism event witnessed in Kampala during the last two weeks.
The prime minister stated that the meeting tackled bilateral relations between both countries, along with the carried cooperation within the Nile Basin Initiative, and Museveni excluded any disputes to be happened with Egypt in this concern, adding that all disagreements can be solved and suggested holding a summit meeting for the Initiative countries. Dr. Nazif welcomed the suggestion, especially that there are no disagreements at the strategic level between the Initiative countries but technical ones that can be settled. The prime minister mentioned that both sides agreed on the Initiative goal namely achieving comprehensive development in all countries, considering these countries need for developing the energy sources, rationalizing water usage, and transforming to industrial countries something which would achieve mutual interest.
Concerning the technical support provided by Egypt to Uganda, the prime minister referred to the carried technical cooperation with Uganda and added that cooperation in the energy sources development will be discussed during the visit to be paid by minister of electricity and energy to Uganda. The Ugandan President showed interest in this active field.
Dr. Nazif has participated in the summit second session, and announced that his speech given on behalf of President Mubarak included Mubarak's greetings to the African heads and presidents and covered the Egyptian efforts taken to improve women and children health situation, along with cooperation with the African countries in this field. The prime minister added that Egypt has sent 124 physicians to Africa, in addition to several medical convoys and establishment of medical centers for health care in some African countries and will continue supporting the comprehensive development efforts in Africa. Dr. Nazif asserted that Egypt has found a cure for malaria which was used in one African country and cooperation is taken with other countries in this concern, taking into consideration the impact of such disease on the economic and social development in Africa.
The prime minister reviewed Egyptian efforts in improving women and children health situation, referring to the large leap witnessed in reducing number of newly born death by two third compared to year 1992.
Dr. Nazif noted that the African countries are keen on cooperating with Egypt in the energy field especially within the sector development in Egypt where the individual average rate of electricity reached 28000 MW compared to 1000 MW in some African countries.
Related to cooperation fields with the African countries, the prime minister added that several technical aids are currently carried and called for the necessity of developing cooperation in trade and investment fields through establishment of mechanisms required for encouraging trade and investment, as well as providing transport network .
