Follow-up of Phase I of the 3rd underground line (Al-Attaba- Bab Al-Sha'ria)

Prime Minister, Dr. Ahmed Nazif, visited the site of phase I of the 3rd underground metro line, with the objective of following – up the performance of implementing this phase.

The Prime Minister was received by the Minister of Transport; Eng. Alaa Fahmy, Head of the National Authority for Tunnels; Atta Abd Rabo, as well as the authority leaders and representatives of the companies implementing the project. Dr. Nazif was accompanied by Ministers of Finance, Electricity, International Cooperation, Economic Development, Environment, Administrative Development, Housing, Local Development, as well as Governors of 6th October, Cairo, and Helwan, Chairman of the Arab Company for Contractors; Ibrahim Mahlab, and the French Ambassador to Egypt.

Implementation of this phase is expected to be completed and inaugurated in October 2011, to be extended from Al-Attaba to Al-Abassyia area with length 4 km to cover 5 underground stations namely Al-Attaba, Bab Al-Sha'ria, Al-Geish, Abdu Basha, and Al-Abassyia.

The second phase of the third line will be implemented in parallel, and shall extend from Al-Abassyia to Al-Ahram St. in Heliopolis with a length of 7.7 km, and will be inaugurated in October 2013. It is worth noting that intersections in this phase were transferred, work locations were delivered to companies implementing the project by July 2009, and implementations are carried according to a set schedule where 20% of the total actions were achieved.

Studies are currently being prepared regarding the third phase of the third line, extending from Al-Attaba to Imbaba, Al-Mohandseen, and Boulaq Al-Dakrour, to be connected to Cairo University station to the second line, with total length of 18 km, with a financial aid provided by the French government. Works related to intersections of the first part in the third phase namely Al-Attaba to Kit Kat was initiated, and other parts of the third phase will be offered for implementation in 2011.

Concerning the fourth phase of the third line, the French side will prepare the related studies, designs and documentations, and will extend from Heliopolis to Cairo Airport with length 10.5 km, and shall be financed by the French government.

The prime minister has announced several points during his tour visit paid to the first phase of the third underground metro line (Al-Attaba – Bab Al-Sha'ria) as follows;

• The tour visit comes within directions of President Hosni Mubarak regarding the necessity of following-up implementations of mega projects, especially that the government is paying great interest to solve problems of transport in Greater Cairo. The underground metro project, including all phases, has achieved a tangible leap in facilitating public transportation in Cairo.

• The tour visit showed that Bab Al-Sha'ria recent accident did not delay implementation of the first phase of the third line and work will be completed on the set date in October 2011.

• The importance of such line returned to its location as being the first line passing by Cairo accidently, adding that actions in the second phase of the third line have started in parallel to the first phase, to be completed by the end of October 2013 along with extending the third phase to be completed by 2015 and designs of the fourth phase has also started, something which considers as a great achievement.

• The underground metro project will contribute in facilitating public transportation in Cairo, taking into consideration the increasing traffic jams, especially within licenses given to 100,000 new cars annually. In this concern, Dr. Nazif called for the importance of encouraging the usage of public transportation.

• Regarding Ramadan month preparation, the prime minister added that the coming cabinet meeting will tackle preparations to fulfill people's requirements of food supply and confirmed the government keenness on people's interest through providing their needs with affordable prices particularly for the limited income people.

• Dr. Nazif congratulated students succeeded in the general certificate of secondary education and wished luck for those who didn’t pass, stating that the current year result is lower than the last one due to the gap year.

• The government is playing great effort to expand the higher education through establishment of new universities, and the prime minister called for the importance of having eye on the technical education which is of same importance as the higher education.
